Growing alone at times but usually in small to numerous clusters on often well decayed hardwood logs. There is one reports of them growing on Rhododendron and one observation notes that the forest contains Asimina sp, Quercus sp, and Carya sp. The mushrooms themselves vary in color with caps that can be white, brown, brownish, yellow stained, or a gradient of all three. The stem often a gradient with a shade of yellow being the middle gradient color between the pale colored apex and darker stem base. Sometimes with yellow being the dominant stem color. KoH negative on the cap. The caps measure 5-20mm wide with the tooth-like overhanging material on the cap margin. Stems 10-50mm long and reportedly 1-3mm wide. Spores are white N=14 Me=8.6x6.1µm Qe=1.4. Pileipellis with diverticulated elements. Odor is described as mealy, cucumber, foul, bleach-like, farinaceous, or of watermelon rind. Most commonly it is referred to as like cucumber. They appear to grow in the middle to upper east coast USA including the Midwest from May - December but with the greatest numbers in October. There is reportedly a possible UV reaction but no photos at this time. [1]
